Types of Braces: How to Choose in Orthodontic Treatment

There is no single right option in orthodontic treatment. Different types of braces are considered based on the condition of your teeth, the treatment goal and your expectations.

Metal braces

A durable option that has been used for many years. Often preferred for complex alignment problems too.

Ceramic (aesthetic) braces

Close to tooth colour, so they are less noticeable. Popular with adults who care about appearance; following the dentist's advice on care and staining is important.

Lingual braces

Placed on the inner surface of the teeth, so they are not visible from outside. They may not suit every case and the adjustment period can be longer.

Clear aligners

Preferred for some mild to moderate cases. The responsibility for wearing them lies with the patient; consistent wear matters for success.

Questions to ask when choosing

  • How long is treatment expected to take?
  • How often will the check-ups be?
  • How will my oral care change and what should I look out for?
  • What is the retainer plan after treatment?

Retainers are usually needed at the end of treatment to keep the teeth in their new position. Book an orthodontic examination to learn which method suits you.

The information on this page is for general purposes only; an examination is required for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment plans are determined by the dentist according to each patient's condition.
