When Should a Child Have the First Dental Visit?

Oral health habits form early in childhood, so it is important not to put off the first dental visit. The general recommendation is a first check-up after the first tooth appears and around the first birthday.

Why do baby teeth matter?

Baby teeth are important for chewing, speech and holding space for permanent teeth. Decay in baby teeth can affect a child's eating and comfort.

Preparing your child for the visit

  • Do not use the dentist as a threat.
  • Describe the visit in simple, positive words.
  • If possible, choose a time when your child is calm and rested.
  • Plan the first appointment as a get-to-know-you visit, without an urgent problem.

What you can do at home

  • Clean teeth twice a day with a soft brush once they start to appear.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste in an age-appropriate amount; ask your dentist about the amount.
  • Limit sugary food and drinks, especially sweet drinks in a bottle at night.

Preventive treatments

Depending on your child's situation, the dentist may suggest preventive treatments such as fluoride application or fissure sealants.
