Gum Health: Signs and How to Protect Your Gums

Healthy gums play an important role in keeping teeth firmly in place. Gum disease often starts without pain, so it is important to know the early signs.

Warning signs

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • A feeling of loose teeth

What causes it?

The most common cause is plaque and tartar built up on the teeth. Smoking, some systemic conditions, hormonal changes and poor oral care can increase the risk.

How to protect your gums

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use floss or interdental brushes once a day.
  • See your dentist for regular scale and polish and check-ups.
  • Reduce or quit smoking.

When to see a dentist

If bleeding does not stop within a few days, bad breath continues or you notice receding gums, book an examination. Early cleaning and care often help stop the problem from progressing.

The information on this page is for general purposes only; an examination is required for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment plans are determined by the dentist according to each patient's condition.
