Why Is Scale and Polish Important? How Often Should You Have It?

Plaque that builds up on teeth hardens over time into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing and can lead to gum problems.

What is a scale and polish?

A dentist or hygienist removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and around the gum line with special instruments. The teeth are then polished.

What happens during the visit?

  • Your teeth and gums receive a short check.
  • Tartar is removed with ultrasonic and, if needed, hand instruments.
  • Surfaces are polished and oral care advice is given.

Brief sensitivity or slight gum bleeding may follow and usually passes within a few days.

How often?

Usually every six months. If you are at higher risk of gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent check-ups and cleaning.

Does it wear down the teeth?

Done correctly, it does not harm the tooth surface. If you have sensitivity, tell your dentist before the procedure.

After the cleaning

Keep brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Regular care and check-ups help slow down the build-up of tartar.
