General Aftercare Tips

General points to keep in mind after dental treatment.

This page is for general information. Always follow your own dentist's specific instructions.

Until the anaesthetic wears off

  • Do not eat until the numbness has gone; you may bite your lip, cheek or tongue.
  • Avoid hot drinks, as a burn may go unnoticed while numb.

General oral care

  • Brush at least twice a day and clean between the teeth.
  • Clean the treated area as your dentist specifies.
  • Smoking and alcohol can affect healing; avoid them as your dentist advises.

Eating

Avoiding hard, very hot or sticky foods in the first days is often recommended. Your dentist will give individual advice.

Contact us if

  • Swelling increases or you have a fever
  • Bleeding does not stop
  • A crown, filling or prosthesis breaks or becomes loose

Follow-up appointments

Do not skip follow-up visits after treatment; they help maintain the result.
