The basis of healthy teeth is simple daily habits. Correct brushing and flossing help protect against cavities and gum disease.
Brushing
- Brush twice a day for about two minutes.
- Use fluoride toothpaste.
- Hold the brush at about 45 degrees to the gum line and use short, gentle strokes.
- Do not skip the outer, inner and chewing surfaces; clean your tongue gently as well.
- Do not press hard; brushing too hard can damage the gums and tooth surface.
Choosing a brush
A soft-bristled brush suits most people. Replace your brush about every three months or when the bristles fray. Electric brushes are a good option when used correctly.
Flossing
A toothbrush cannot reach between the teeth. Using floss or interdental brushes once a day helps remove plaque between them. Wrap the floss in a "C" shape against the side of the tooth and move it gently up and down.
Regular check-ups
Home care does not replace regular dental check-ups. A check-up and, when needed, a scale and polish about every six months is usually advised; your dentist decides the frequency.
