Root canal treatment aims to save a tooth when the nerve and blood vessel tissue inside it is infected or damaged, by cleaning and filling the canals.
Who may be suitable?
- People with constant toothache or pain that worsens at night
- Those with prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold
- Those with an abscess, swelling or deep decay in a tooth
How does the process work?
- The condition of the tooth is assessed with an examination and X-ray.
- The inside of the canals is cleaned under local anaesthesia.
- The canals are filled and the tooth is restored with a filling or crown.
- Treatment may be completed in one or several sessions, depending on the tooth.
After treatment and care
Mild sensitivity can occur for a few days. Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it has been permanently restored. Tell your dentist if pain, swelling or sensitivity persists.
